Education:
For Educators
We Want to Hear From You!
If you are currently designing or leading a program related to HT/TH that you think our members &/or professionals would be interested in, please contact us at [email protected]. We would love to connect with you and learn more so we can help support and share your program appropriately.
The CHTA desires to see an increase in HT/TH educational programs and opportunities in the coming years. Please feel free to reach out to us if you are an educator who would like to connect! We believe that we can now help to support and train more Horticultural Therapy professionals, leading to a more cohesive, inclusive, diverse, and skilled network of HT specialists and advocates across Canada.
HT Education Points Clarification Process
Overview
This process confirms that courses shared with CHTA membership align with CHTA terminology, foundational understandings, and best practices in horticultural therapy education. The goal is to ensure evidence-based, high-value learning for CHTA members while providing educators with support, visibility, and opportunities for networking and collaboration.
Since 2013, there was a pause in accrediting Horticultural Therapy education programs due to a necessary review of CHTA’s accreditation policies and volunteer capacities.
While we are not accrediting programs as we did before, we now have a points clarification process to evaluate and promote horticultural therapy education. This process is collaborative and seeks to understand the educational offering’s goals and learning outcomes, as well as how the course format provides meaningful, interactive learning experiences. At this current time, we are unable to deeply review, approve, or accredit HT/TH coursework.
The points clarification process reviews the facilitator’s qualifications (HTR preferred), including professional experience in Horticultural Therapy and adult education. Courses are evaluated based on a variety of criteria, including the type of instruction, contact hours (live, interactive teaching) or recorded/passive learning, and the course length, with a confirmed number of ‘hours’ assigned accordingly.
Course Curricula
The Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association (CHTA) is committed to promoting evidence-based, relevant, and effective Horticultural Therapy (HT) and Therapeutic Horticulture (TH) education. There are a range of educational programs being offered in the Canadian context Canada, as well as internationally, that touch on topics related to Horticultural Therapy (HT), Therapeutic Horticulture (TH), and meaningful people/plant interactions.
The CHTA Horticultural Therapy Core Skills and Knowledge document summarizes the scope of topics recommended for curricula of courses and workshops that focus on HT/TH. Please review this document when designing a course or workshop in HT/TH. Note which of the core skills and knowledge points you are addressing in your program then submit to [email protected] for review of your course/workshop.
Course Review/ Proposal Form
