A Horticultural Therapy Internship is an educational and practical experience that integrates previously mastered classroom study into a planned and supervised HT work setting aimed at fulfilling the educational and professional HT competencies of the Intern, as set out by the CHTA.
Although not compulsory for CHTA Voluntary Professional Registration, the HT Internship is viewed as a major educational component with a focus on gaining hands-on experience and for achieving point requirements towards registration. The duration of an internship is 1000 hours to be completed within three years.
In order for an HT internship to be recognized by the CHTA in support of an application for Voluntary Professional Registration with the CHTA, an HT intern must be a member of the CHTA during the period of the internship. Also, the internship must be supervised by a member in good standing of the CHTA who holds an HTR or HTM designation.
If you are interested in pursuing an HT internship that will lead toward Voluntary Professional Registration with the CHTA, please do your homework to avoid future disappointment. It is up to you to check that there is a qualified, registered horticultural therapist, who is a member in good standing of the CHTA, currently employed at the agency where you are applying; and that this person is willing and able to guide you through an extensive HT internship experience.
Prospective HT internship applicants also need to be aware that HT internship sites may require that an applicant completes a Criminal Record Check. The requirements for a Criminal Record Check vary from province to province and may require residency in that province.
HT Internships are managed exclusively by an internship supervisor (HTR or HTM) and the intern, not by the CHTA. Members in good standing of the CHTA may contact the CHTA office at firstname.lastname@example.org for information about Internship Guidelines.
